Student Voice

The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) encourages schools at all grade levels to foster student engagement in school safety strategies and approaches. Students play a crucial role in keeping schools safe as they are most often the people who see, hear, and know things before they happen.

Involve Students in Each Layer of the Comprehensive Approach

Create a Student Led School Safety Club

One way is to have a student-led school safety organization at every school working with school personnel to identify and address unique needs. Check out this flyer - PDF - 4.61 MB for tips on getting started.

Student Advocate for School Safety Program (SASS)

The Maryland Center for School Safety (MCSS) Student Advocate for School Safety Program (SASS) was created to ensure that Maryland youth are given the opportunity to provide feedback and recommendations regarding school safety issues that are pertinent to them. SASS members are energized and enthusiastic students who want to positively influence school safety efforts throughout the State of Maryland. SASS members will:

  • Represent the perspective of their region by closely interacting with the student member of the Advisory Board to the Subcabinet of the Maryland Center for School Safety.
  • Provide insight on the student perspective related to school safety topics.
  • Expand their knowledge about school safety topics through collaboration with MCSS staff.
  • Serve as a local advocate for school safety.
