Defining Upstander

An upstander is a person who has information about a safety concern and makes the choice to take action. This is when a bystander, the person that has information, makes the choice to do something to stop or prevent harm from happening. It is important for people to have multiple ways to report information.

Ways to be an Upstander

Go to a Trusted Adult

Students and caregivers have a trusted adult in the school environment that they feel safe going to with information about a concern.

Call to Make a Report

Anyone with information can easily locate or quickly recall a phone number to call to share information about a concern.

Use a Digital Tool

Anyone with information can easily access a webpage, online form, or phone application to make a report.

Help People Become an Upstander

It is important to help people make the choice to become an upstander by sharing information with them in different ways throughout the year.

Promote reporting in several ways

  • Teach and Talk

Share information directly with students, school staff, caregivers, and community members making clear the responsibility they have to keep school safe.
  • Provide Visual Reminders

Post visual reminders in prominent places throughout the school and in the community with key details about how to make a report.
  • Embed the SSMD Reporting Link

Embed SSMD information in prominent locations such as the LEA and school webpage, parent portals, and the student learning management system for easy access.
  • Honor Privacy

Make it clear that anyone who makes a report can do so anonymously through SSMD. People are more likely to make a report if they can remain anonymous.
